How To Play Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is a solitaire game (also called patience) played by a single player. It is played with a single standard deck of 52 cards.

To start play the deck is shuffled, then cards are dealt to form these piles:

  • Stock: All unplayed cards are stored here face down.
  • Waste: Cards are dealt three at a time faceup to this pile. Only the top card is playable. The second and third cards in the pile are left visible, but cannot be played.
  • Tableau: This is the main play area. Cards can be moved from the Waste pile or from other Tableau piles. Cards are played in descending order by alternate colors. For example, if a 6 of Diamonds is visible in a Tableau, a 5 of Spades or a 5 of Clubs can be played on it, no other cards can be place here.
  • Foundation: The goal of the game is to build the four Foundations in order from Ace to King. Each suit (Clubs, Spades, Diamonds, Hearts) has a separate foundation. Only a single card can be moved to a foundation at one time.

Scoring: The player receives the following number of points for each move:

  • Waste to Tableau: 5 points
  • Waste to Foundation: 10 points
  • Uncover Tableau card: 10 points
  • Tableau to Foundation: 10 points

Winning: Once each Foundation contains all 13 cards for the specified Suit the game is won.
